GDP is derived by valuing all production by an economy using a specific year’s average prices. Governments use GDP as a comparison tool to analyze an economy’s purchasing power and growth over time. This is done by looking at the economic output of two periods and valuing each period with the same average prices and comparing the two together. Since GDP is calculated using a base year and does not include inflation, it represents an economy’s nominal GDP if that economy did not realize any price changes when compared to the base year. The deflator is the measurement of inflation since the base year; dividing the nominal GDP number by the deflator removes any effects of inflation. GDP only counts the final production of an economy and measures the output of every good produced by quarter. Therefore, only finished products like a bicycle are counted toward GDP, and the manufacturing production of tires, frames and other bike components are not counted. GDP also includes services as part of its measurement.

Over time an economy usually goes through periods of growth booms and busts recessions. This is called the business cycle. There have only been five full years of “technical recessionary conditions” negative economic growth during this period. For most of the last fifty years the economy has grown in size each year. Real national output does not rise or fall at a uniform rate. All countries experience fluctuations in their rate of economic growth – some more volatile than others!

The British economy experiences regular trade or business cycles. Annual and quarterly movements in real output are tracked to measure the cyclical movement of the economy. When Real GDP is rising quickly the economy is said to be experiencing economic growth or recovery. When real output falls or when the growth of output is below its long run trend rate – then an economic recession exists.

One full economic cycle normally last between years – but this is by no means guaranteed.

Volta’s pile was at first a technical curiosity but this new electrochemical phenomenon very quickly opened the door to new branches of both physics and chemistry and a myriad of discoveries, inventions and applications.

The electronics, computers and communications industries, power engineering and much of the chemical industry of today were founded on discoveries made possible by the battery.
